Muslim mason immortalized at French cathedra
This sign of inter-religious friendship is rooted in the Medieval tradition and reflects the city of Lyon's links to its large Muslim population. But a widely publicized outcry from a tiny extreme-right group has forced the Archdiocese of Lyon into damage control.
"This has nothing to do with religion. It's a sculptor who wants to pay homage to a construction site chief," said the Rev. Michel Cacaud, rector of the cathedral. "That's all."
In France, where Islam is the country's second religion, the government has worked to get Muslims to integrate into French culture, while at the same time confronting cases of Islamophobia, from the desecration of Muslim graves to attacks on mosques.
Ahmed Benzizine, a practicing Muslim born in Algeria, a former French colony, sees the gargoyle in his image as "a message of peace and tolerance."
"When I started to work in churches ... exactly 37 years ago, it was considered a sin that a Muslim enter a place of worship other than a mosque," he said.
He has worked off and on since 1973 at Saint Jean Cathedral, which dominates the old city of Lyon and has been honored as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Gargoyles Striker Sunglasses Review
Because everyone’s face and head shape is different, testing sunglasses can often times present interesting challenges. While some sunglasses offer adjustable nose pieces or flexible arms to accommodate a wider variety of faces, others go for the middle-of-the-road path to fit more faces without any of those features. The result is something like the new Gargoyles Striker sunglasses, which fits well and stays put in a variety of activities across a variety of faces.
The Striker’s I received feature red frames and a smoke lens. While this lens is much lighter and better for outdoor activity than the dark green signature Gargoyles lenses, I wished for a little lighter tint for mixed sun/shade that’s often encountered on mountain bike rides or trail runs. As it was, I didn’t feel the tint was detrimental, but they could be even more versatile with a lighter tint.
Heading out for a run, the visor or hat interface with any given pair of sunglasses can sometimes be a challenge. The straight arms didn’t interfere with the fit of any headwear I typically use while running. On the bike, my Giro Xen helmet can really interfere with the fit of many sunglasses, but the Striker’s slipped on without issue and stayed put throughout my rides.
I did the design of the Striker’s and felt them to have just the right coverage for wind, sun and trail protection. And, they stayed put under all conditions.

‘Jhalak Dhikhhla Jaa’ will have Madhuri Dixit dance…
The latest buzz in the industry is that the cine diva, Madhuri Dixit is being wooed by the organizers of the telly show Jhalak Dhikhhla Jaa to make a special appearance in the show’s upcoming fifth season.
Madhuri was last seen in the Bollywood musical Aaja Nachle which had her playing a US-returned dancer reviving her old and defunct dance school in a small town in India. The film, sadly, had come a cropper at box office, but Madhuri’s dance prowess had shone through.
To cash in on this Madhuri magic the makers of Jhalak Dhikhhla Jaa 5 have approached the actress to appear on the show and even dance on stage.
Negotiations are still going on as Madhuri lives in the US. However, we hear that the actress is interested in making her first appearance on an Indian television dance show.
After all, the public still hasn’t forgotten her Ek Do Teen magic.

Bollywood’s appeal for peace…
Ahead of the Ram Janmabhoomi- Babri Masjid verdict, a host of Bollywood celebrities have come together to appeal people to maintain peace and harmony and not be swayed by aggressive sentiments or elements if not happy with the verdict.
Superstar Shahrukh Khan too has stepped in by saying that God doesn’t reside in manmade monuments.
“Allah, God, Bhagwan in whichever name we pray to the supreme power, resides in man’s heart, not in man-made houses for Him,” SRK wrote on microblogging site Twitter.
The actor said any belief should first take root in the heart.
“I mean first our beliefs should take seed and grow in our hearts and then only we should manifest that in places of prayer and God,” the actor tweeted.
In the light of the Commonwealth Games he added that it’s easier to demolish than to build.
“I hope we Indians realise how difficult it is to build stadiums and respect and so easy to break monuments and disrespect each others’ beliefs,” he wrote.
The Ayodhya land dispute verdict was supposed to come out on September 24 but has been deferred with Supreme Court deciding to hear the plea for postponement on September 28

Sanjay Leela Bhansali can’t stop praising Aishwarya Rai enough. At the unveiling of the first look of his upcoming film Guzaarish, starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya, at Cinemax on Thursday, Bhansali told mediapersons that he gets thrilled by working with Ash.
“Aishwarya is my muse, my jaan and I get terribly excited when I make a film with her because she is very, very special. Some people are timeless and Aishwarya will be there for another 20 years,” Bhansali said.
Guzaarish is Bhansali’s third film with Ash. Earlier he has worked with her in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas.
Not just Ash, Bhansali even went on to heap praises on Hrithik.
“I have never enjoyed working with any other actor as much as I have enjoyed working with Hrithik, just for the kind of talent he has, for the kind of person he is,” Bhansali gushed.
“This was a very special film for us. We are glad to share this special piece of work with you before we reveal it to the rest of the world,” Aishwarya told reporters.
Also introducing Monikangana Dutta, Guzaarish is set to release on November 13.

Shweeb, FIRST Among Google's Project 10^100 Winners
Google is a sucker for world-changing projects. Two years ago, Google's appetite for big ideas led to Project 10^100, a call for ideas that change the world by helping as many people as possible. Now, 150,000 entries later, Google has announced the five winning ideas. A total of $10 million will be doled out to the winners, each of which are working on solutions to different global challenges.
Shweeb, for example, tackles the challenge of driving innovation in public transport. Google is ponying up $1 million for the concept, which combines recumbent cycling technology with monorails for a safe, human-powered urban transport system. Shweeb's website elaborates:
On a typical day, you would get up in the morning and descend to the second level of your residential tower, where there is a Shweeb station and ample pods waiting for you. You would get into the capsule, park you luggage and hang up your jacket. You’d then ride to work at a leisurely pace over the top of the traffic jams – not even raising a sweat. You wouldn’t have to worry about finding a car par

Google Names Five Winners Of Project 10^100, Awards $10 Million Total
9/24/2010 08:58:00 AM
Two years ago today, we began Project 10^100 by asking you to share your ideas for changing the world by helping as many people as possible. Your spirit and participation surpassed even our most optimistic expectations. People from more than 170 countries submitted more than 150,000 ideas. We selected 16 big ideas and asked the public to vote for their favorites. The five ideas that received the most votes are the winners of Project 10^100. Over the past 12 months, we’ve reviewed concrete proposals to tackle these ideas, and today we’re pleased to give a total of $10 million to five inspiring organizations working on solutions to each of these global challenges:
Idea: Make educational content available online for free
Project funded: The Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization that provides high-quality, free education to anyone, anywhere via an online library of more than 1,600 teaching videos. We are providing $2 million to support the creation of more courses and to enable the Khan Academy to translate their core library into the world’s most widely spoken languages.
Idea: Enhance science and engineering education
Project funded: FIRST is a non-profit organization that promotes science and math education around the world through team competition. Its mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by giving them real world experience working with professional engineers and scientists. We are providing $3 million to develop and jump start new student-driven robotics team fundraising programs that will empower more student teams to participate in FIRST.
Idea: Make government more transparent
Project funded: Public.Resource.Org is a non-profit organization focused on enabling online access to public government documents in the United States. We are providing $2 million to Public.Resource.Org to support the Law.Gov initiative, which aims to make all primary legal materials in the United States available to all.
Idea: Drive innovation in public transport
Project funded: Shweeb is a concept for short to medium distance, urban personal transport, using human-powered vehicles on a monorail. We are providing $1 million to fund research and development to test Shweeb’s technology for an urban setting.
Idea: Provide quality education to African students
Project funded: The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a center for math and science education and research in Cape Town, South Africa. AIMS’ primary focus is a one-year bridge program for recent university graduates that helps build skills and knowledge prior to master's and Ph.D. study. We are providing $2 million to fund the opening of additional AIMS centers to promote graduate level math and science study in Africa.
Here’s a short video celebrating the inspiring work of these organizations:

Readjusting to civilian life after spending years in the armed services can be unsettling to some.
That's why a pair of groups are holding a free forum for McHenry County veterans of all ages, scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 13 at McHenry County College's conference center, 8900 U.S. Highway 14 in Crystal Lake.
The college, which GI Jobs magazine recently designated a military-friendly school for 2011, has 103 veterans and dependents registered at the school.
Organizers hope the event is a one-stop shop to address veterans' needs, whether they involve post-traumatic stress disorder, knowing the options available for those interested in continuing their education and even offering support to mothers with children serving in the military.
Other topics to be covered include women's veterans issues, financial aid at MCC, job assistance and health care.
State Rep. Mike Tryon will also be on hand to meet with veterans about concerns he could focus on in at the state level.
Chi Gamma, MCC's student veterans organization, and the Veterans Network Committee of Northern Illinois are planning the event.
"We're trying to make this as broad as possible so that everyone can get their questions answered and issues addressed," said Paul Wheeler, president of Chi Gamma Iota.

the terminal
The Terminal in 2004 comedy-drama directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones. We are talking about a man trapped in a terminal at the international airport JFK, when he was denied entry into the United States and at the same time can not return to their homeland, the fictitious Krakozhia, because of the revolution. The film is called inspired 18-year tenure of Mehran Karimi Nasseri at Charles de Gaulle International Airport, Terminal I, Paris, France from 1988 to 2006
Viktor Navorski arrived at the international airport JFK, but believes that he can not leave the airport. While he was on his way to the United States, the revolution was launched in his home nation Krakozhia. Because of civil war, the United States no longer recognizes Krakozhia as a sovereign state and has denied entry to the United States of Victor, because he technically has no nationality. Unable to leave the airport or return to Krakozhia, Victor, and do not live in the terminal.
Watch New Tom Selleck TV Series Season Premiere 2010
"Blue Bloods" is the newest cop drama on TV, debuting Friday (Sept. 24) on CBS. It stars Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan, the Chief of Police in New York City, and Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan and Will Estes as his three children. The two sons are cops, the daughter is an Assistant DA.
We enjoyed the premiere. The tension between Danny (Wahlberg) and Erin (Moynahan), him a hot-head cop who does things his own way, which may not always be on the right side of the law, and her a lawyer whose job it is to uphold the law, creates an interesting family dynamic.
But the real storyline we're interested in is the dead son Joe, another cop who was supposedly killed in the line of duty, and his involvement with an investigation into the Blue Templars, a secret society within the NYPD. Youngest Reagan child Jamie (Estes) is approached to take over Joe's investigation, which is what actually got Joe killed. We're intrigued to see where that investigation goes, especially since brother Danny has a Templars pin in his safe.

Temulent
Temulent:Kathy from Martinsburg, West Virginia, recently stumbled upon a new word for it. Word abstemious, and this applies to the moderate use of food and beverages. It requires self-control, and later it was extended to the habits and lifestyles, which vary at the table. It comes from Latin, where the AB-meaning “from” and temetum mean intoxicating beverage.
The only word that I found containing the same root temulent, now rarely used. This meant a drunk or drugged. Seventeenth century were variations temulently, temulentness, temulentious, and temulentive.
Go drink-related word vinolent, addicted to wine. Charles Wheelwright transfer line from Aristophanes, as “… Vinolent tendency of Athenian women.” Happy Hour “Agora”, the common people!

Dream 16: Gegard Mousasi Submits Tatsuya Mizuno
Gegard Mousasi is the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion and former Dream middleweight champion, and now he's the current Dream light heavyweight champion, beating Tatsuya Mizuno at Dream 16 to win his second title in Japan's top MMA promotion.
The fight was widely regarded as a mismatch, and for the most part it was. Although Mizuno held his own on the ground at times, it was a relatively one-sided fight that lasted just over six minutes. Mousasi finished the fight with a rear-naked choke that caused Mizuno to tap out very quickly.
In April, Mousasi lost badly to Muhammad "King Mo" Lawal, and he still has plenty of work to do on his wrestling before he can be considered one of the truly elite light heavyweights in MMA. But he showed on Saturday that he is the best in Dream.

Jason 'Mayhem' Miller Submits Sakuraba at Dream 16
Jason Mayhem Miller said before the fight that he wanted to submit the Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba at Dream 16. He did just that.
Miller dominated the past-his-prime Sakuraba, beating him up with punches before finishing him with an arm-triangle choke. It was the first time Sakuraba had tapped out since his first MMA fight, in 1996.
"This has been my dream my whole life," Miller said afterward. "And I say to everyone, believe in yourself because you can live the dream."
It wasn't much of a fight -- the 41-year-old Sakuraba really can't hang with opponents like Miller anymore -- but it seemed to be a victory that meant a lot to Miller, who showed a great deal of respect to Sakuraba before the fight, and did so again as he addressed the crowd both in English and in Japanese afterward.
Miller is well known as the host of Bully Beatdown, and he'll likely be back in the United States fighting for Strikeforce early in 2011. But the bigger question is what's next for Sakuraba. He's one of the sport's all-time greats, but it might be time for him to ask whether he should really keep fighting.

DREAM.16 Preview and Predictions
DREAM needed to pull out all out the stops for DREAM.16. Their last event for the year is also the first for the year that will be broadcast during primetime domestically and given their financial woes, they need to impress. DREAM were still booking fights until less than 24 hours before DREAM.16 but it was worth it, they managed to put on the card that they needed.
Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller is one of the most crowd pleasing matchups of all time. Tatsuya Mizuno will be the Japanese underdog against the foreign belt collector Gegard Mousasi. Shinya Aoki will try to take another step towards reclaiming his spot among the top lightweights in the world against a man who once upset another Japanese champion - Marcus Aurelio. Four great featherweights fights that will define the future of the division.
